Bernard White, a pioneer resident of this county and for twonty .years bishop of the Third ward, yasBod away at tho family Tesjdonco, 725 Twenty-third street, at 8 o'clock last night. Death "was d,lie to pnoumonla-and pnoumonla-and followed an lllnoHs of ten days. Mr White was 73 years of ago and had been in falling health for the past year Hla condition had only been deemed serious,, however, for a few days. The decedent is survived by a wife and eleven children. Bernard White was born in London, Lon-don, Eng., November 9, 1839. His father died when he was two years old, leaving him to be brought up by his mother, who went fnto tho Mormon Mor-mon church In 1854, and 'who lived with her son In Ogden until her death at the ago of ninety years. The son Joined the church In May, 1854, nnd Immigrated to America the same year For awhile after Mb arrival in this country he worked In the office of tho 'Mormon," a church paper. He came to Utah with the John A. White followed the freighting' business and later engaged In the lumber business It was In 1SG9 that ho first engaged in business in Ogden, beforo which time ho had been making his home In Cache valley. Since entering the lumber lum-ber business In 1S70, Mr White had gradually increased his business and had made a success of tho venture He served as a member of the city council for the torm from 1S77 to 1S79 He had done considerable In advancing ad-vancing the growth of tho city and had shown a public spirit In many ways. In addition to his lumber business he owned an extenslvo stock farm In Box Elder county. Ho had always been an active member mem-ber In tho Mormon church and was In the bishopric of the Third ward for over twenty yoars, serving for more than ten years as the first counselor to Bishop Wlnslow Farr, whom ho succeeded suc-ceeded as bishop, filling that position until February 7, 1901, when he ro signed, haing moved to Box Elder county Later he removed to this city and had since made his home on Twenty-third street The funeral will be held Sunday af-tornoon af-tornoon at 1 o'clock, at the Sixth -ward chapol, Bishop Owen M. Sanderson officiating. of-ficiating. The remains will He in stato at the family residence Saturday evening from 7 to 9 and Sunday morning morn-ing from 10 to 12 o'clock A special funeral train will be run by the Ogden Rapid Transit company to accommodate the friends and relatives rela-tives who will accompany the remains from this city to Brlghnm, where the Interment will take placo. |
