Show DAUGHTERS OF EARLY PIONEERS HOLD MEETINGS Prominent amonr the social events of the week were the monthly meetings meet-ings of the Daughters of the Pioneers, which were held Tuesday afternoon. Company A was entertained by Mrs Kate Sobel at the home of Mrs. Reuben Reu-ben Wright, 656 Seventh street. The program was an especially excellent one, the main feature being an interesting inter-esting narrative of pioneer experiences experi-ences by Mrs Ingcbor Halverson who was a member of one of the hand-cart companies who crossed the plains in the earh fifties She is now nearly SO years of age, but her story was told with a strong voice Bnd her memory appeared to be as good as It ever was. In her talk, she said that Bhe crossed the plains when she was 20 years old and that she was harnessed to tbe cart every morning and would pull it 20 miles a day. She did not surfer from the exertion, she said, but was strong and healthy and at night would join in a dance around the campfire. While making the trip, she said, their dally rations consisted of a pound of flour, a little piece of bacon and some beans. She was married shortly after arriving ar-riving in Utah and suffered many hardships along with the other pioneers. pio-neers. Among these hardships, she said, was the invasion of the state by millions of grasshoppers and she told how she was one of those who built big bonfires and then chased the grasshoppers into them. Following Mrs Halvcrson's talk. Mrs Sobel read a biography of Mrs I Lidia Ponce Farley, her mother lu-I lu-I law, and her story too, was full of in tereBting experiences. A brief biographical bio-graphical sketch of Mrs .rane IV Richards Rich-ards was given by her daughter, Mrs. Josephine West of the general board. Several solos were sung by Mrs. ... L. Cottara and Miss Maud Farley and two readings were given by Miss Thel ma Wright, All of these were much appreciated. After the program was concluded, dainty refreshments were served by the hostess Special guests of Com pany A were Charlotte Parry from Manti, Phoebe Roberts of Layton and Mrs. Josephine and Sadie West of the general board. Company G met with Mrs Alice West and tho program was taken up mainly with biographical sketches. Mrs. Mary Heller spoke upon the life of President Wilford Woodruff and Mrs Dr. Robinson gave a sketch of the life of her grandparents, Mr and Mrs. Yearsley. Mrs. Leah Cunnlug-bam, Cunnlug-bam, one of the older members present pres-ent spoke In a reminiscent mood, of her own early life. Three beautiful solos sung by Miss Margaret Grill and a piano solo by Verna Van Dyke gave much enjoyment to all present. The visitors at the meeting were Mrs. Richard Pearce and Mm. Eliza Wood of the general board. Following the meeting, delicious refreshments were served by Mrs. Wt and Mrs. Henry A. Anderson Mrs. Harriet Taylor entertained Company B at her home at Wall avenue ave-nue and Twenty-seventh street. At the meeting Mrs. Fred Taylor gave a sketch pertaining to the lives of tho women who first came to Utah. A solo was sung by Miss Myrtle Haywood Hay-wood and a reading entitled ' Youth, Innocence, Experience and Love" was given by Mrs. Sarah Bal'.antyne. The reading was said by all, to have been one of the best that has been heard at a meeting of the company. During the social hour, nicely appointed luncheon was served by the hostess The special visitors were Mrs Clara Jeppson, mother of Mrs. Dr. Snedak er and Mrs. Elnora Pardoe of the general board. Company F met at the home of Mrs George Poulter, 854 Twenty-sixth street and enjoyed tbe presentation of biographical sketches of 4 pioneers, pio-neers, Mrs. Jane Treseder, Mrs. Rachel Ra-chel Burton, Mrs. Agnes Herrick and Mrs. Burgoyne. A duet was nicely sung by Mr. and Mrs. Will Poulter and the hostess served an excellent luncheon. There were 12 visitors presont. Company D was entertained by Mrs Mary Hutchlns at her home on I Wall avenue. The last lesson In Tul- lldge's history of Utah was discussed by Mrs. Jane White and Ireta Lindsay Lind-say rendered to piano solos Mrs Kate Toponce gave biographical sketches of Mrs Rozella Jensen and Mrs. Almlra Taylor The visitors at the meeting were Mrs. Eliza Hume and Miss Ireta Lindsay of Salt Lake and Miss Rachel Mlddleton of the general board. The meeting of Company H was held at the home of Mrs. Georgie McGregor, Mc-Gregor, 3316 Woodland avenue. A sketch of the life of Mrs Isabel Pid cock was given by Mrs. Wilson and a sketch of the life of Mrs. Mary Bit-ton Bit-ton was given by Mrs Mary Garner A piano solo by Miss Dorothea Woods and a vocal solo by Mrs. Agnes Warner War-ner were features of the meeting Mrs. Rofe Ballantyne of the general board was present and made a few remarks The meeting was attended by an extra large crowd and at Its conclusion, the hostess served refreshments. re-freshments. Company B met with Mrs. Ezra H G Williams at her home on Hudson avenue and the history lesson was given by Mrs Louise Richardson. Mrs. Lucv Nixon, a pioneer, gave an interesting recital of her early experience ex-perience in Utah and Grandma Williams Wil-liams sang .a song of her own composition. com-position. Mrs Williams Is now 89 vparR old and her contribution to the program was especially interesting I and, with the talk of Mrs. Nixon, was greatly appreciated. Mrs. Bessie Millard sang a vocal solo In a pleasing way and later served serv-ed delicious refreshments, being assisted as-sisted bv Mrs Bessie Draper. Mrs Riuthla Douglass represented the gen-ral gen-ral board at the meeting. |
