Show Wilderness Confab Studies Politics The Utah Wilderness Association Asso-ciation announces its Second Annual Conference, titled "Politics '82 and Utah Wilderness", to be held on March 27th, 1982, in Suites G and F of the Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, UT. The conference will feature a presentation at 8:30 a.m. by Governor Scott Matheson discussing: "Can Utah afford af-ford more than token Wilderness?" Wild-erness?" Representative James Hansen (R-Utah) will speak at 3:30 p.m. on the subject: "Wilderness and non-wilderness-what is the balance?" Other highlights of the daylong day-long conference include a formal question and answer session at 10:00 a.m. with State Senator Frances Farley, Far-ley, Democratic candidate for Congress in Utah's 2nd District. (Rep. Dan Marriott (R-Utah) has also been invited but has yet to respond officially to the invitation.) A second question ques-tion and answer session begins at 10:55 a.m. with San Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson, Democratic candidate candi-date for the U.S. Senate. (Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has also been invited but has yet to respond officially to the invitation.) Other events throughout the day include the remark able multi-image presentation presenta-tion "A Price to Pay", by John Talmage, and a talk by Dave Foreman, one of the founders of Earth First! There will also be a number of timely workshops for people to chose from and at; end. Utah has only one Congres-sionallv Congres-sionallv designated wilder-ness-the 27,000 acre Lone Peak Wilderness Area. Utah has less designated wilderness wilder-ness than any other western state and less than many eastern states such as Georgia. Florida, West Virginia Vir-ginia and South Carolina. The ongoing wilderness designation processes of the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management need, as a part of the public input process, the continual involvement in-volvement of the UWA and its more than 500 members. But only the Congress of the United States can designate an area as wilderness. So, this year's conference will focus on the important political aspect of wilderness designation and protection of Utah's spectacular wild country-the High Uintas, Mt. Nebo, the Deep Creek Mtns., the Pine Valley V.tns., Mt. Naomi, the San Rafael Swell... Members of the press are invited and welcome. |
