Show TENNIS CROWDING OUT GOLF Net Game Is Enjoying Vast New Birth of Popularity at Wimbledon Court in England. The Westminster Gazette notices, that lawn tennis, even more than golf, is enjoying a vast new birth of popularity popu-larity in England. "The attendance at Wimbledon each day, the cosmopolitan character of the entries and the enthusiasm showinr the finer points of the game all show the bold that tennis has obtained the world over. England gave the game birth, but for the time being she has failed to produce any new body of great players. "The English representation at Wimbledon Wim-bledon labors under the disabilities of age, and there Is little sign as yet of the new generation which waits to fill the shoes of the elders-. It Is commonly common-ly alleged that the English youth lacks the dash which gives crispness and force to the strokes of the Americans and the colonials. I 'Trohahiy the true reason is that England has a dearth of hard courts or of grass courts on which the bound of the ball Is true. The stroke that takes all chances is only learned when a nan can feel certain what the ball will do when It has struck the surface of ll? ffround." |
