Show librarian appointed ap F anointed tl y doard D building temporarily closed for Ren novation new system planned at a meeting held tuesday night by the richfield Rich neld public library board mrs horace nielson was appointed librarian and details connected with handling ren novation work now in progress at the library building were discussed the library was temporarily closed after mrs mis elizabeth mag labys release as librarian became effective saturday night and will be reopened as hoon as the work of painting the interior putting in some new book stacks removing the mantle from the old fire lace and ana making other building improvements improvements can be completed feces ary equipment is being purchased and the library books jre are to be catalogued cataloguer catalo gued under a duodecimal I 1 system the new librarian went to to the brigham young university this summer to complete her studies and was recently awarded a first class school librarians certificate which requires a state teachers certificate as well as special training in library work A petition circulated by a group of mrs Magle bys friends and signed by several hundred richfield citizens urged that she be retained as librarian when the petition brought no response the committee voiced the opi onion that although altho although uh the library has been badly in need of building improvements prove ments and record equipment the librarian had not been at fault and they voiced appreciation of her services however the library board has felt justified in trying to bring the library under regulations similar to that of libraries under the state educational system although such specific requirements are not required by law at public libraries at the meeting tuesday night the budget for the year also was discussed under the state law the library board has the authority to nominate appoint and remove e from office any librarian employed and to control the building and purchases for the library by means of presenting claims for which checks are drawn by the city treasurer thus keeping the city officials acquainted with the handling of funds in first and second class cities not more than one city elective officer is is permitted to serve on the library board however this is not the case for third class cities and at present a councilman is a board member the mayor of a city is always a board member but may or may not be president of the board the carnegie library regulations provide thattie that the city contribute 1000 annually to maintain the library under the state law Rich fields library board is now composed of mayor kenney G W coons mrs elbert L cox A J ashman mrs R D buchanan mrs taylor nielson and orson christensen board members are appointed for fixed terms which expire at different periods |
