John O. Mather, SS years of age and a resldont of this city lor the Inst fifty -live years, died at his residence, .i:'.7 South Second West street, Sunday afternoon after-noon from the effects of cerebral anaemia and senile mania, resulting from an injury in-jury reJelvcd some time ago which con-lined con-lined him io his bed. Present nt his bedside bed-side wero his two daughters. Mrs. Helen M. Root and Miss, Georgia Mather. The funeral will bo held from tho residence Tuesday nfternoon at - o'clock. John O. Mather was born at I.almullc, Scotland. In 1S2'. from which plaeo ho came to this country rind fettled in Salt Lake City in 1855. Immediately upon his arrival he was employed as a carpenter car-penter by Heber C Kimball, wllh whom ho remained for fivn years, having joined the Mormon church before leaving Scotland. Scot-land. At the end of that tlmo ho left the Mormon church and was one of tho flrpt apostates. Liberal Party Supporter. For a number of years afterward Mr. Mather followed the business of carpenter carpen-ter and builder and was reputed to be ono of tho llnest. workmen In the city. He became a staunch supporter of the Liberal movement, in this city when the cause was In Its infancy and was a member mem-ber of the earliest flambeau clubs, taking tak-ing an active part In the forwarding of tho Liberal party movement and In the organization of Its earliest marching clubs. Ho later became identified with the American party movement, bolng known among his host of friends and acquaintances ac-quaintances ns an enthusiastic- exponent expo-nent of Unit party's principles. Of Sterling Character. All who knew John O. Mather knew him as an earnest advocate of the principles princi-ples In which ho believed; as a man of sterling honesty in all business dealings with his fellow men and as a man who had never violated the confidence reposed re-posed in liini by those with whom ho camo in contact, He leaves a wide circle cir-cle of friends. Mr. Mather had been confined to his bed for the last two months from an in-lurv in-lurv to his hip. Ho never fully recovered from tho shock of the fall to which his lnjurv was due. on account of his extreme ex-treme age. He was attended by Dr. O. I. Thorn, the family physician. Mr. Mather Is survived by James Mather, claim agent of tho Rock Island railroad: Robert Mather, a nephew, who is associated with the Westlnghouse Electric company; George Mather of Galesburg. 111.; Mrs. Alice Wood, a niece, of Galesburg, 111.: Ed "Mather, connected with the Rock Island railroad, and his two dnughters, Mrs. Helen Mather Root and Miss Georgia Mather of this city. |
