A shark si darted up the narrow, shallow Matawan creek today in the third fatal raid in less than two weeks and darted out ( again, leaving death in its wake. The shark killed a man and a boy. I vi It mangled another boy so badly that tn he will . lose a leg and probably will die. Today's victims of the man-eater th were swimming two. miles up the creek De from Raritan bay, when they were at- or tacked. Brooklyn, who is in St. Peter 's hos- h( pital, New Brunswick. The teeth of f0 the shark slashed and mangled one leg ta so badly that it will have to be ampu- th tated. Young Dunn is probably fatally w injured. The shark has killed four bathers thus to far this season. Thousands of persons from many sec-tions sec-tions of New Jersey lined the bank of the little stream tonight, and with dy- al namite, spears and nets tried to an- nihilate or capture the man-killer. But I" with the stealth and speed with which r it bore down on its prey the shark is- L believed to have slipped away to safety in the deep waters of Raritan bay. Chicken wire has been stretched across the mouth of the creek in the hope of keeping the huge fish in. Old-fashioned Swimming Hole. Stillwell and a number of other Mat- awan lads were having a swim in the old-fashioned swumming hole, about fifty feet wide, not far from the Matawan station. The Matawan is but a brook, which empties into Raritan bay. An occasional six-inch bullhead is the biggest big-gest fish ever seen there. At the yards of the New Jersey Clay company the stream is perhaps fifty feet wide and T at high tide eight or ten feet deep. .g Near here the boys were sporting about in the cool water. m "Watch me float, fellers!" called j young Stillwell, who had finished his y( morning in a near-by basket factory. w Then came the shark. Charles Van Brunt, 13 years old, one of Stillwell 's companions, says he was a huge black p- fish with a white belly and long fang- w like teeth. 0f First Victim Dragged Down. fi The shark turned ou its .back as it Pr shot at young Stillwell before his com- a panions, stricken dumb with terror, could shout a warning. Its teeth sank 1SI into Stillwell 's flesh. A shriek of terror ter-ror and Stillwell was dragged beneath e the surface in a red whirl of, foam. ca His companions scrambled to the shore where their horrified cries brought ar a number of young men running to the a scene. ' ' A shark ! He grabbed Lester, ' ' cried Van Brunt, pointing at the still troubled waters. Stanley Fisher, son of a former com- c'; modore of the southern line, a powerful ca young man weighing nearly 300 pounds, did not wait for details. He plunged into in-to the water and made for the spot where the boy had disappeared. Either e the shark dropped its first victim or m its mate appeared -and made a furious C1 attack on Fisher. w With its long teeth the shark tore the flesh from Fisher's thigh, stripping it to the bone. Frightfully wounded ,e Fisher fought the monster. lie struck at it and kicked with hi? if (Continued on Page Two.), H-ESTER KILLS I 10 WOUNDS THIRD (Continued from Page One.) uninjured leg. The swirling waters carried the body of the Stillwell boy within the reach of Fisher. He seized the oy and, injured as he was, struck ; out for shore. Furious at being robbed 1 of its prey the shark again rushed at the fast weakening Fisher. Like a torpedo the shark's tough head hit Fisher. Its teeth cut him like a fast revolving buzzsaw. Unconscious from pain Fisher sank. Youn Still-well Still-well 's body was snatched from his grasp by the shark and the fish shot away toward to-ward the mouth of the creek. The attack was over in a flash. One of the boys went to Fisher 's rescue and he was dragged ashore. He was rushed to the Monmouth memorial hospital. But he was so terribly cut and had lost so much blood that he died in a few hours. With its appetite for blood unsatiated the shark, or sharks, sped downstream. Lcfs than half a mile from where till-well till-well and Fisher were mangled some little boys were in swimming. Another Boy Mangled. Among the swimmers was Joseph Dunn. .Joseph 'a home is in Brooklyn. He and a brother and some other boys were seeking seek-ing refuge from the heat in the waters of the little creek. Darting at young Dunn the shark seized the boy 's legs with its teeth. .Shrieking with pain and terror Joseph tried to kick the fish off. But the creature had a firm hold on the calf of the boy's right knee. "With his flesh in shreds the boy was going down for the last time when the other boys, led by his elder brother, braving death, swam to his aid. Slight Chance for Life. Their splashing and cries frightened the shark and it glided away. At iSt. Peter's hospital in Xew Brunswick Dr. II. S. Cooley said the boy has only a fighting chance to recover. He will loso the mangled leg, that is sure. There is a'so danger, Dr. Cooley said, that blood poison will set in for the wounds are jagged and ugly. Dunn lost a great deal of blood. The news of the shark 's savage raid smead quickly. At first it was reported thitt half a dozen men had been killed- Crowds gathered on the banks of the! little, creek armed with every sort of weapon.
