In saving the life of another, Alexander Gillespie, formerly of Provo, received Injuries In-juries from which he died at the Holy Cross hospital" at 6 o'clock Sunday morning. morn-ing. The accident which cost Mr. Gillespie his life occurred at the Cactus mine at Kewhouse on January 2. He lived for nearly two weeks with a fractured skull that left the brain partially exposed. Moat of . the time he . was perfectly conscious and was able to give an account of the accident. . Mr. Gillespie resigned as Deputy Internal Inter-nal Revenue Collector on December 1, to accept a position at the Cactus mine. At the time of the accident he was working on one of the lower levels of the mine. and was assisting In the retlmberlng of an ore stope. A cage loaded with timber for this work was being lowered into the mine. . . - As the cage was slow In coming down. Mr. Gillespie went to the end of the tunnel tun-nel and glanced up above to the descending descend-ing car. He he was watching It he saw that the boy who was operating It was on the verge of collapsing. A moment later he saw the lad rose control of the machine, totter and fall. In an Instant Mr. Gillespie grabbed the rope from below and stopped the cage. The shock was sudden and it Jarred a timber loose, which came tearing down the shaft. The timber struck the man squarely on the head, fracturing his skull. The stopping of the car saved the boy's life, but caused Mr. Gillespie to be fatally fa-tally injured. He was picked up by fellow fel-low workmen and was later brought to this city and placed In the Holy Cross hospital. At the hospital It was found necessary to remove certain portions of the skull, leaving the brain exposed. " In spits of the severe Injuries received. Mr. Gillespie was conscious a greater part of the time, and was able to clear up his business affairs and assist the nurses In caring for him. Friday night he became worse and his temperature began to rise. His suffering continued to Increase until death came Sunday morning. He was 48 years old and was born In Scotland. ' He leaves a widow .and one son. who Is now 13 years old. ' When a small boy Mr. Gillespie dame to Utah with his parents. Bishop and Mrs. Gillespie, who now reside In Prove. ' The body will be- taken to Provo for burial. The funeral service will be held in the Fifth ward meeetlng-house at that place Tuesday at 1 o'clock In the afternoon. after-noon. ..... ...... . |
