They soon anced plans to be married, but her a warned that should she marry "aitlaw, she would be disowned by iamily. : August, 1900, Anna Marie Thayne eloped wuh and married Harry A Longabaugh Harry Jr. claimed toLve e original marriage license. The marriage was very short-lived for in the very same month, Longabaugh wa" involved in both a train and bank robbery and deserted his new wife leaving her pregnant, and headed for Butch cSy3 W'th EtU P'aCe a"d Annie Marie Thayne had truly been disowned by her family and so, unable to return home, she went instead to the home of friends in the state of Washington. On February 7, 1901 a son was born to her whom she named Harry Longabaugh, Jr. (although he was known to be called Harold Thayne Longabaugh and Robert Longabaugh etc.) Annie Thayne Longabaugh was killed shortly thereafter in a tragic train wreck and her son was given to a foster family to be raised. Harry Longabaugh Jr. claimed to have accidentally encountered Butch Cassidy in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in the 1930's and said that Cassidy informed in-formed him that his father was still alive. He saw his father for the first time in 1940, and continued to visit with him yearly until 1947. He claimed that his father died in 1957. During the last years of his life, Harry Jr. began traveling throughout the west, seeking more information on his family. His knowledge, though accurate in many details, was mostly gleaned from hear-say and he could not prove his statements. To that time, no one had proven that Cassidy and Longabaugh had survived their South American adventures. At this time, however, I had in my possession an exhumation report upon the bodies buried at San Vicente, Bolivia, the supposed last battle and resting place of Cassidy and the Kid. The exhumation had been performed under the direction of President Rene Berrientos of Bolivia himself, assisted by the world reknowned physician Dr. Tornapolski of Poland. The report proved beyond any doubt that Cassidy and the Kid were not killed at San Vicente, Bolivia. I spoke with Harry Longabaugh Jr. by telephone on June 27, 1970 and we made an appointment to meet and discuss the subject at length. Due to one thing or another, the meeting never ook place, and I next heard of the tragic death of Harry Jr. in a hotel fire in Missoula, Montana. Supposedly, all of his evidence - the marriage license,' divorce papers, etc. - perished with him. But my research uncovered additional ad-ditional evidence worth mentioning. In 1910, Longabaugh and Cassidy became involved in the Mexican Revolution with Pancho Villa, and lived for a time with friends and relatives in the Mormon colonies in Chihuahua, Mexico. I was amazed with I discovered who the "relatives" were. Cassidy, under the alias of Tod McClammy, was Irving with George A. Brown of Colonia Dublan, while Longabaugh, under the alias of Tex McGraph, spent considerable time in the home of Nephi W. Thayne at Colonia Dublan. Nephi was Anna Marie Thayne's older half-brother! Nephi Thayne had been one of the guards left behind to guard Dublan after the Exodus of 1912 (Captain of the Home Guards, Unit 1, Scout Unit), was foreman of the ranch owned by Lord Beresford in Chihuahua where Longabaugh worked for a time, and in 1927 became President of the Mexican Branch of the LDS Church. Nephi Thayne has sons and daughters still wng in Utah and New Mexico. M What of the Sutance Kid. Did he die in 1957 as HarryS I claimed? Evidence now shows fiat Harry Alonzo Longabaugh dijp in the Utah State Prison in 1955 unVler the alias of Hiram Bebee, serving life sentence for the murder of the town marshal of Mt. Pleasant, Utah inP 1945. Harry Jr. said he last saw his father in 1947. In both instances his dates' are about two years off, but allowing for hear-say information in-formation and poor memory, perhaps it is close enough. Charlatan or impostor, or was Harry Longabaugh, Jr. the real thing? What is known for sure is that there was a real Anna Marie Thayne, her family did disown her for marrying an outlaw, and she did have a son. Sundance married a Mormon! t - t - , .- ; .
