superintendent of the Bountiful Sunday school has just met with a n tragic death in Cowley the town in the Big Dig Horn country Wyoming where he had lived for forI I more than thirty years Deceased married Eva Thurgood daughter of Mr and Mrs William Thurgood a prominent merchant in Bountiful in an early day and some fome years after she died he mar mar- married married ried ned Jane Lewis of Bountiful who has also passed away Surviving are one s sister Lizzie Cornia widow of Orson Cornia of Woodruff Utah and four half brothers Gwynn Frank and Elias Lewis of Salt Lake and Alvin Lewis Le of Bount Bountiful ul The following account of his death appeared in the Cowle Cowley Pro Progress of Jan 6 1933 1033 At about 4 o'clock last Saturday morning the citizens of Cowley were awakened by the first fire alarm in maI many months This proved proved proved ed to be the fine home of Mr David Lewis which was the first hotel Cowley ever had When the alarm was given the fire had gain gain- gained gained gained ed such headway that putting it out was out of the question sleeping Mr Lewis a widower was sleep sleeping in ing in the large Jarge house all alone as ashe ashe ho he has always the death of his good wife a few years ago lie He was awakened before the fire had gained much headway and andI I thinking he could put it out with with- without out Dut summoning aid proceeded to carry y water un up ut the th stairs A I i I the fire first originated presumably presumably ably from a defective wire He con con- continued continued con continued carrying buckets of water up stairs until he found it was of little avail Then he called Bert Marchant his next door neighbor and while Mr Marchant was hastily dressing Mr Lewis rushed back to the burning building and while in the act of filling more buckets was overcome by shock and exhaustion and there by the I water hydrant friends found his I body cold in death The building was completely destroyed tI tl was only partially covered by insurance insurance a ance nee David Lewis was one of Cow Cow- leys ley's Cowley's Cow earliest pion pioneers rs and one of our most progressive and wide wide- wideawake wideawake wide awake awake citizens He was the second secondI mayor of Cowley Cawley and without fear of successful contradiction we truthfully say he was the host best I most pro progressive mayor Cowl Cowley has ever had I The Lewis for years lived in a anice anice anice nice comfortable room 1 log house house- house and and when the time came that it looked like Cowley was in for a period of real activity he was not lon long in sensing the need of a hotel and addition accordingly had a lar large e addi addi- add add- addition tion built to his house which they converted com into a hotel This hotel I had like an enviable reputation for its like home atmosphere and soon al- al also also al also so became famed for its excellent home cooked under the th able ablA management of his fir first t w wife e Eva Lewis In later years with the advent I of the automobile as traveling men and visitors stopped here less ess frequently and the hotel busi bus business ness discontinued ess be began an to wane they discon discon- the tho business and the hotel residence became the pr private ate family resi- resi resi dence denee once more Yet Mr Lewis never lost f faith ith in Cowleys Cowley's future and ho he consistently boosted for a greater and better town I Several years after the death of Mrs Eva Lewis Mr Lewis Le brought I another loveable wife from fro Utah ti-A ti everyone lovin lovingly ly called Aunt Jane These two people lived very happily on until one night only a few years ago she too passed away very ery suddenly since which time he has lived Jived in inthe the large house alone until last Saturday only to see the lovely home so well cared eared for by himself go up in smoke He had taken his meals for the most part with the family of his son R R R Lewis since the death of Aunt Jane Mr Lewis has been identified here with many activities He lie was as for a of years president of me club a ami mi mighty good one too He lie also ser ser- served ser served ved ed for many years as a n member of the Church Board of Education of the Big Horn Stake of Zion lie He became president of The Cowley Progress Printing Publishing company at its or organization in the spring of or 1906 1006 If our memory serves us correctly he also alfo served as school trustee for a number of years He lie had always taken a great eat interest in educational af- af affairs af affairs fairs He was an uncompromising foe oe of the t liquor traffic and strong trong for prohibition Politically he was an uncompromising uncompromising Democratic He lie did yoeman service for his party in the last election and was overjoyed that the Democracy won von sucha such a sweep sweep- ing sweeping victory in county state and nation and then fate steps in and calls him hence just on the eve e of the inauguration of his good friend friC the the Hon lion Leslie A Miller as Governor of Wyoming His Ills friends I I woh were elected to the le legislature 1 from Bi Big Horn county were all nIl set setto setto t tto I I I setI to provide him witha with a Je legislative position in the comin coming session na as S a slight alight reward for his service to his party his party in tho the past and his many Cowle Cowley friends of both political parties would have been glad lad to have s seen n him hirr thus deservedly honored Funeral services were held in the ward hall hail Monday nf afternoon and were lar largely ely att attended and after the services were over a largo large cortege corte e followed the remains to the city cemetery where all that was mortal of Uncle Dave was waR tenderly
