Show MARKER I 1 al MEADOWS ON H SEPTEMBER I 1 beautiful bronze tablet set in a ftp st aall avdich avas aas fleeted to protect l the graves appropriate SERVICES HELD on september I 1 was by invitation at the ceremonies un nn veiling a bronze tablet at the si e of the mountain meadows massacre which date was the hanniver sary of the week of september ath to alth 1857 the utah pioneer trails and land marks association of which george albert smith of the twelve Is pres ident and master of ceremonies in operation cooperation with the people of southern utah bad had the matter in mcharge and in I 1 a very suitable and reverent spirit conducted the dedi cation between and peo pea pie of the surrounding towns wit jessed the event on august 73 persons regis to volunteer their services at the meadows and erected a tine fine substantial permanent stone wall completely enclosing on all sides the original cairn near the spring they removed all weeds dust debris or other mater material lal from around the pile of stones and tidied the spot up very nicely on the east wall where the deep wash threatens to encroach upon the common tomb they went down deeply set rocks in cement to stay erosion and erected the wall upon that tooting footing elsewhere the walls rest upon a foundation a foot in depth then on the west side stone steps were built both ins ide kle and out so that ingress and exit avas was provided a hand rail assists this work was due primarily to the energy of president wm win R pal mer of cedar city the bronze tablet Is exceptionally large arge and handsome it bears a tac fac simile of the celebrated buffalo head upon which brigham young wrote his message on the plains that he had passed that spot and all is well either side of that aie the words no 17 meaning that this is the marker placed by that asso elation then follows the wording erected 1932 MOUNTAIN S A favorite recruiting place on the old spanish trail in this vicinity sept 7 11 1857 occurred one of the most lamentable tragedies in the annals at the west vest A company of about arkansas and missouri emigrants led by cap tain charles fancher en route california was attacked by white men and indians all but seven teen being small children were kill ed john D lee who confessed par as leader was legally exe buted here march 23 1877 most fit lot the emigrants were burled in their own defense pits this monument was reverently dedicated september 10 1932 by the utah pioneer trails and landmarks association and the people of southern utah the Pr program the ceremonies were simple ap prop and feelingly conducted the program was as follows singing by the choir invocation by john T woodbury of st george who said in part in sorrow and humility we this day place a marker over the acene svene lot of the mountain meadows massaccie Mass acie we are deeply sorrowful that it has been necessary to place a marker over such a place and we liay pi ay f bee 0 lord to sanctity sanctify this thing which has happened to the people so that they may learn the lesson that it may never be repe repeated eted in the history of the earth quartet bartet the rock of ages john D giles secretary of the utah pioneer trails and Land As spoke ing a complete roster of the var vars qs places m aich the las association of which this spot is no 17 president wm R palmer thank ed theaople thOlO ople tor far their cooperation and expressed his appreciation to all who participated and accepted the tablet the enclosing wall and these ceremonies in behalf of the people of southern utah dr george W middleton spoke of his life riding the hills with these very people and of this his later profess lonal tonal life curing their sick and of his further operation cooperation co with the people lof southern utah in this act don to day hei he spoke glowingly of ue tie ag niti cent ent and heroic spirit of the alf rl continued Coni aued on page j MOUNTAIN MEADOWS CONTINUED pioneers and asked that they be al ways held in sacred memory frank beckwith spoke of the pleas ure urel of seeing a noble spirit manifest itself in this act so appropriate so fitting and the ceremonies conducted in such a commendable and praised all who made such an ex pres slon possible M J urie president of the cedar city commercial club spoke of their part and of their willingness to re spond america sung by all uniformed members of the utah national guard tired fired a salute to the beald and unveiled the bronze tab let george albert smith spoke of the spirit of cooperation and finished by thanking the people who aided in this day Benel diction by luther U terry fit pf enterprise john D giles then read the word I 1 ing on the tablet slowly and impress vely ively tor for the benefit of all |
