Show FiRE IN THE LYCEUM. THEATRE Sometime last night tho Lj'ccum theater caught fire, and, had it no', been for the prompt response of tho fire department and tho falling of the asbestos curtain on tho flames, tho Interior might have hoen putted. The loss amounts. to ahout$l,500. The fire was discovered this morning morn-ing at about 1 o'clock, but It is thought by the fire fighters that tho fire had boon smoullcrlng since the removal of thinss belonging to the theatrical company having an engagement engage-ment at tho house. The vaudeville company removed its paraphernalia to the dopot at about 1 o'clock this morn Ing and it Is thought that some ono, in the moving, throw a IUhtcd match, cigar or cigarette into Inflamablo material ma-terial in the store room under tho I stage. Tho fire was readily extinguished by the firo department, but not until I tho stage floor practically had been destroyed, the $r00 piano burned up and some of the files of the stage destroyed. de-stroyed. The electric wiring nudor-neath nudor-neath tho stage was also burned out and a new conduit will havo to br provided before tho theater can re-sumo re-sumo businoss Fortunately the ropes holding the asbestos curtain were burned off and tho curtain fell to the floor, preventing prevent-ing the fire from extending to the front port of the building. Tho entire loss Is estimated at from 1,500 to $2,000, the material burned being fully insured. The loss would have been much greator had it not been that it was "change night" for the companies engaged to play at the house. The last week's company moved out after the performance and It happened that the new company had not yot placed Its paraphernalia in tho storo room. The only tnlnTv left In the store room to bo destroved were a few chairs and tables. The only loss to the new company will bo that It will have to cancel its engagements engage-ments for tho week It will require a number of days' time to repair tho stage floor ani place the houso In condition for business. |
