Show an old gentleman bun by a railroad car thie morning ft terrible accident occurred at the north end of the C P yard in thia city by which a passenger on the emigrant train sus bained auch injuries as will probably RESULT IK HIS DEATH As it in well known when the C P emigrant train arrives each morning at the switch near the depot the caboose is disconnected from alie main frain which goes on leaving the caboose for a time until the engine after sidetracking side tracking the other cars returns and draws the caboose into the depot this coining a man named reuben doyle of probably sixty two years a farmer of good circumstances cum stances and a resident of seattle washington territory was standing upon the platform of the caboose when the thain was uncoupled from it fearing that the train had become thus uncoupled and that he and the other emigrants were going to bo left behind he MADE A JUMP from his position to catch the hind car of the moving train which by this time was about eight feet distant from the caboose this latter was also on the move a brakesman being engaged in setting the brake to bring it to a stop As the old man jumped the brakesman bra keeman and a peanut boy knowing very well that he would fall aad be run over by the caboose grasped at and caught him as his feet left the platform the brakesman held to him as long as possible but the man was too much for him and while dandling over the front of the caboose made lucli strong endeavors to recover from his perilous position as to cause the brak emana grasp to relax and the unfortunate man fell to the ground his right leg across alie track the brakeman set the break tighter but to no purpose for one of the wheels of the front truck passed over the unfortunate mans leg CUTTING IT off between the ankle and knee the caboose was brought to a stop before the entire car passed over him and mr doyle was placed in a car and brought into the depot where he was immediately waited upon by dr carnahan the dr had him taken in a blanket to the keeney house and an examination was made of his injuries besides the mutilation of the limb it is feared that mr doyle has suffered internal injuries the physician his little hope of his recovery the train men were net to blame in the least for had the old gentle made his contemplated leap he would undoubtedly have the car for which he jumped been knocked down by the caboose run over AND INSTANTLY KILLED this is another warning to those who make it a practice of endeavoring to get off trains while in rapid motion |
